I believe it is always special to include friends and family in your ceremony, to achieve this you can invite a person to read a poem or reading that you have chosen or ask them to choose one that they think suits you, as a couple (this then saves you a job and includes others in your ceremony more). An excellent book found here in New Zealand is titled ‘heartsongs’ by Pinky Agnew which is full of readings for weddings and the contents include:
- classical love
- holy love
- inspirational love
- you and me, love
- laughter and love (including the Owl and the Pussycat!)
- prose love
- wishes and love
- quotable love.
One of my favourites is titled The One, sadly the author is unknown, however it is below for you to enjoy:
THE ONE
When the one whose hand you’re holding
Is the one who holds your heart,
When the one whose eyes you gaze into
Gives your hopes and dreams their start,
When the one you think of first and last
Is the one who holds you tight,
And the things you plan together
Make the whole world seem just right,
When the one whom you believe in
Puts their faith and trust in you,
You’ve found the one and only love
You’ll share your whole life through.
